Time is elapsing, things are changing; the 90th anniversary is drawing
near, everyone is coming. Regarding human beings as the basis and striving all
the time for the better, the spirit of Henan
University, which has been passed
from generation to generation, is the motive force of the development of Henan University. Every grass and tree of
the campus exudes true feeling, and every movement and action of our Alma
Mater find a perfect response in our mind. Our Alma Mater is always
cherished in the most sacred place in our heart. It is always our proudest
topic wherever or whenever we meet. We share the same Alma Mater and
cherish the common wish.
The 90th anniversary of the university has been longed for by all of her
students. We are expecting the happy get-together to relive our formal
friendship and to talk about the human life. Probably you have already
achieved great success and won public recognition, or your aspiration is
still to be fulfilled, or your hair on the temple has turned white, or you
are right in your prime. Whatever you are, we have once met and become
acquainted. We studied in the same school and made friends with each other.
All the old memories are hovering in the mind and all the afterwards
experience lingering in the mouth…
Whether you are an alumnus or alumna, we are all sisters and brothers. How
we want to sit together to offer you a cup of tea, watching its light smoke
curling up and letting the past events moistening our minds. Listening to
the voices of the classmates, flowers will blossom in our hearts; looking
at the smiling faces of the schoolmates, the old happy time will appear
before our eyes. How many times we strolled around the garden hand in hand;
how many times we listened to the chimes of the Iron Pagoda shoulder by
shoulder. Your hard-working figure and sweet smile shaped a bright and
beautiful scenery on campus.

Introduction to Henan University
Henan University,
located in Kaifeng, a famous historic
cultural city and the capital of 7dynasties in feudal China, was
founded in 1912. It was first named the Preparatory School for Future Study
in Europe and America.
Later it changed to Zhongzhou University, and then the State No5 Zhongshan
University, and further Henan
Provincial University.
Finally in 1942, it became the State-run
Henan University.
By the end of 1940s, it had already become a well-known comprehensive
university, occupying an area of 2000 mu and consisting of 6 colleges,
namely, the colleges of art, science, law, agriculture, engineering and medicine,
and 15 departments. After the founding of the People's Republic of China,
the school and its departments underwent various reorganization. It again
changed to Henan Teachers College (1953), Kaifeng Teachers College (1956),
Henan Normal University (1979). In May 1984 the university obtained its
former name --- Henan University. In July 2000, the university joined up
with Kaifeng Medical College and Kaifeng Teachers College and became one of
the two key comprehensive universities in Henan Province. Henan University
has witnessed the development of modern Chinese higher education, and made
tremendous contribution to the establishment and development of Henan
provincial higher education.
In a long course of schooling practice, Henan University has shaped an
excellent academic atmosphere, which has passed from generation to
generation, and encouraged its scholars and students to uphold truth, to
love our motherland and to serve the society. During the 90 years of
running since its establishment, a good number of well-known experts were
enlisted to teach here, including Fan Wenlan, Feng Youlan, Guo Shaoyu, Luo
Zhanglong, Xiao Yishan, Meng Wentong, Gao Heng, Luo Tingguang, Mao Lirui,
Ji Wenfu, etc. It has trained more than 300,000 talented students of various
specialties. Many of them such as Yin Da, Deng Tuo, Bai Shouyi, Hou Jingru,
Yuan Baohua, Wang Guoquan, Yang Tingbao, Gao Jiyu, Ma Ke, YaoXueyin, Wu
Qiang, Zhou Erfu and so on, have now become experts, scholars or social
activists of world-wide fame.
Henan University now possesses 10 major branches of learning: they are
literature, history, philosophy, economics, law, pedagogy, science,
engineering, management and medicine, subordinated to which are 24
colleges, 67 undergraduate specialties, and 53 doctor and master degree
granting units. The university has a staff of 3547 (not including those in
Huaihe Hospital and Dongjing Hospital). Among the faculty of 1600, there
are 4 academicians, 199 professors, and 657 associate professors; and there
are also 2 nationally distinguished young and middle-aged scholars, 42
granted special governmental allowances, 32 provincially excellent
scholars, 34 provincial academic and technical leading candidates, 56
excellent backbone teachers of young and middle ages of Henan province, 14
winners of excellent youth scholarships of Henan province, 4 selected into
the nation's "Hundred-Thousand-Ten-thousand Talents Project", and
29 in the list of the provincial young backbone teachers supporting plan.
Considering the educational background of the faculty, there are 189
doctors and 436 masters. Professors aged below 45 and associate professors
aged below 40 count to 243 all together.
The university now has over 21000 full-time undergraduates, 778
postgraduates and 120 foreign students. There are 46 research institutes,
13 research offices and a publishing house. Henan University Press
publishes 13 magazines, among which The History Journal is the key national
Chinese journal while Henan University Journal is the key national journal
of social science. The university has also established the Computer Center,
the Test Center, the Campus Internet Center, the Modern Educational
Technical Division and some other 30 laboratories. The Special Functional
Material Lab is the key laboratory in Henan Province. The Campus Internet
Center has been connected with Chinese Educational and Scientific Computer
Net and the Internet. The library covers an area of 20,000 square meters.
It has a collection of more than 3,000,000 copies of books, and 170,000 of
them are ancient thread-bound and 180,000 are in foreign languages. All of
them are in automatic management. The cost of teaching equipment counts to
more than 80 million Yuan and the fixed assets value over 300 million Yuan.
In recent years, the university has undergone a series of reforms
concerning the institutional and official system, the personnel
distributing system, the scientific research system and the socialization
of rear service. The university has also carried out an entire credit system
and an elastic learning system. Since 1998 the university has taken in new
students at the same level as those taken by key universities, and the
quality of the students is guaranteed. At the same time, the university has
tried to raise funds in many ways so as to improve the conditions of school
running; it has accelerated the steps of opening to the outside world and
established friendly relationships with tens of universities abroad. It has
regained its membership in the Association of Universities of the World,
and joined in the Association of Universities of the Asian and Pacific
Areas. In the year of 2000 after the establishment of the new Henan
University, Henan provincial committee and government decided to raise a
fund of 600 million Yuan to the construction of the university and opened
up an area of 2000 acre for the new campus.
Entering the new century, the university has formulated " The Tenth
Five-year Developing Plan of Henan University". It clearly put forward
a guiding principle for the work of the university, i.e. "high-point
disposition, high-standard development, high-level break-through and
strong-measure assurance". And it aims to build Henan University into
a comprehensive university with all subjects of learning, with distinguished
features between arts and sciences, and with equal development both in
research and teaching.
The past, present and future of Henan University has filled us with strong
confidence. Her tomorrow is sure to be even more magnificent.

Hold Deng Xiaoping's "3 facings-to" and Jiang Zhemin's "3
representatives" as the guidance; deal carefully with the challenges
and opportunities that China's higher education is likely to confront after
its entrance into the WTO; Constantly adapt to the development of the
situation; create characteristics of the time; take the 90th anniversary as
a turning-point to recall the university's history, to sum up its
experience, to enhance its achievements, to further assembly the wills of
the people, to widen its influence and to push the whole cause of the
university forward.

Donating and Thanks
1. Donations for the 90th anniversary from social organizations,
individuals, alumnae and alumni, either at home or abroad, and also the
staff are warmly welcome (donation in kind will be converted into RMB). All
things that are concerned with Henan University are also welcome.
2. All donations will be used for the construction and development of Henan
University.
3. Donations are voluntary. The starting point for organizations and units
is 5000 yuan, individuals 100 yuan. Donors have the right to choose
donating items.
4. Ways of thanks: the names of all donors, collective or individual, will
be both recorded in the special autograph book preserved in the archives,
and engraved in "The Donating Monument of the 90th Anniversary of the
Founding of Henan University".
(1) Donating units and organizations will be appreciated via news medium
and Henan University's web site. To those that have donated 10 thousand
yuan or above, the university will present in return fine souvenirs. Those,
who have donated 100 thousand yuan or above, may have the privilege of
nomination for one of the activities, and having their names signed on the
new buildings or scenery spots. Those, who have donated half of the cost of
one building or above, may have the privilege of nomination for that
building.
(2) Individuals who have donated 1000 yuan (overseas $150) or above will be
presented with a donating certificate and a fine souvenir. Those who have
donated 50,000 yuan (overseas $7000) or above will be invited as
distinguished guests to the anniversary ceremony.
(3) Donors of 100 thousand yuan or above for various scholarships may have
the privilege of nomination for the corresponding scholarships.
(4) Donors of some precious articles concerned with Henan University will
receive some compensation, a donating certificate and a fine souvenir.
(5) Other ways of appreciation for donation can be decided through
consultation between donors and the university on basis of friendly
cooperation.
5. The university will establish a special fund to award those who have
supplied donating information and succeeded in obtaining the donation.
